Philosophy Friday

Posted by Star 2.0 on April 25, 2014 at 12:35 PM

I decided to bring this back! I used to do this a year ago.

So, let me make you think. Please discuss your opinion Intelligently In the comments!

So here we go:

1. SHOULD WE KILL HEALTHY PEOPLE FOR THEIR ORGANS?

Suppose Bill is a healthy man without family or loved ones. Would it be ok painlessly to kill him if his organs would save five people, one of whom needs a heart, another a kidney, and so on? If not, why not?

Consider another case: you and six others are kidnapped, and the kidnapper somehow persuades you that if you shoot dead one of the other hostages, he will set the remaining five free, whereas if you do not, he will shoot all six. (Either way, he'll release you.)

If in this case you should kill one to save five, why not in the previous, organs case? If in this case too you have qualms, consider yet another: you're in the cab of a runaway tram and see five people tied to the track ahead. You have the option of sending the tram on to the track forking off to the left, on which only one person is tied. Surely you should send the tram left, killing one to save five.

But then why not kill Bill?

New ones every Friday~

With Bill, are you talking about if he was in a coma or something, and you had the chance to give his organs to someone who might need it? Whoa...

Yes, that's the jist of it

I think killing random people to save others is out of any person's jurisdiction as a single sentient entity. Deciding to kill one man to save five others is something for nature to do. Taking nature's job of killing and giving life and distorting it like that will only lead to more complications.

That kidnapper would be pretty unlucky if he/she ended up with a threatened werecreature in their band of highjacked hostages. I would take the gun sure but I would probably point it at the kidnapper for pissing me off. If there was no way for me to kill him I'd probably resort to shooting someone quickly and painlessly. They wouldn't even see it coming. Still doesn't mean I won't fuck that kidnapper up later though.

When it comes to saving my own life I get way more selfish. I'm not going to die. If I see a man walking down the street I'm not going to kill him to save other random people because that's not my call to make. Push me to kill someone in order to save my own life and I will look for alternative solutions but in the end someone is probably going to die by my hands. It might mess with me psychologically for a little while but it won't stop me and I'll get over it in time.

Arcover, I love your posts. xD. As for me... I wouldn't take the man's organs because that's not my decision to make. Yeah, it could help other people, but I'm not here to be everyone's savior, and I don't know for sure that the man won't ever recover. It's too risky.
With the kidnapper scenario, one I would never be in that situation, but this is hypothetical so whatever. If I had a revolver, I would take all the bullets out except one, spin the chamber, and then shot down the line until someone was killed. That way it would be based on chance, and not the emotion of "who do I shoot?" If I didn't have a revolver, I would just shoot a person in the group. (But why can't I shoot the kidnapper? :P )

Lol I love your responses too XD I know right? I would just empty that clip into the kidnappers chest and be done with it. I'd try to avoid the skull because out of all the bones I have within my possession a human skull is not one of them. I'm not a creep I just think animal bones are beautiful and who better to add than a person who thought they could kidnap me and not die. I also considered just shooting everybody in the room so then I don't have to worry about the others and their reactions to me only killing one of them but depending on the situation they could be useful later and I don't 'particularly' enjoy killing.

Oh, good point. If you shoot someone in the group that was well-known or loved by someone else in that group, then that person might try to take you out if he or she got the chance. I would avoid shooting the entire group though, as that would just be a tricky situation to talk out of when the police came (Star, would the police even be involved in this scenario?). I'm not going to go too much into my feelings towards killing, lol, but I'm sure that anyone could figure it out with a little thinking.

I don't think killing him for his organs is the best idea. If the person were already dead, it wouldn't be a problem; but killing a living person is wrong in my opinion. In the scenario with the hostages, I'm gonna go with the general consensus of killing the kidnapper. If there were no way to kill him, and if I cared about the hostages enough, I might commit suicide, but they'd definitely have to be either my closest friends or closest family members. If they were random people, it wouldn't affect me as much.

Would the police be invo-
My god you guys are taking the scenario seriously xD

But, um, yes. They don't, um, like you taking the law into your own hands or some shit. There.

Also, I agree with Arcover. I don't think I could make that kind of call:
ie: taking the poor bastard's organs.

ok depends were they are what time is it the state of his age the other peoples age.
but if it were like 5 10 year olds maybe, but how are the others living without those organs (thinking too much shut up.) if they are like 90 year olds and lived a full life I hate myself for saying this but don't save those 5 people.
